How to Rock the Shag Cut For All Face Shapes

The shag has been around for decades and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. A long-time popular look amongst celebs wanting to rock the effortlessly cool vibe, we’re seeing a fresh revival of the 70s chic cut in 2020.  Here’s how to rock the shag – no matter your face shape!

1 Heart Face Shape

A wispy fringe will sweeten the shag for any heart-shaped human and help balance the proportions of your face and highlight those cheekbones – a la Reese Witherspoon. Gravitate towards longer layers that finish just above your collarbone.

2 Square Face Shape

Work that strong jawline! In order to make the shag work for your face, avoid blunt and choppy layers. Longer layers and a long, side-swept bang will offset angular features and create a softer look, beautifully framing your face.

Pro tip: When styling your hair – put down the straightener and pick up your curler or wand to create romantic waves

3. Oval Face Shape

The great thing about having an oval shaped face is that you can basically rock any cut or style. With that being said, a shaggy bob with layers that hit the cheekbones and chin will emphasize your bone structure.  Because your face shape is so versatile, you can also pull off a more modern, less-layered bob with blunt bangs. Or a super short, shaggy pixie cut. Or a super long shag. You get the picture.

4. Oblong Face Shape

Not to be confused with an “oval” face shape, oblong, is a long face shape with a narrow width and generally a tall forehead. A shag cut is a great option to add some width and body. Take it a step further and incorporate a straight-across bang. The bang will prevent your face from appearing longer than it already is and help mask a long forehead. Not that there’s anything wrong with a big forehead. Just ask Riri.

5  Round Face Shape

Round face? This is THE look for you. The face-framing layers are super flattering, providing soft movement and a natural slimming effect. Opt for blunt ends to automatically draw the eye downward and create the illusion of a longer, more oval-shaped face. Side-swept bangs are always a good idea.
