How to Remove Hair Dye From Your Face

Whether you’re touching up your roots at home or it’s your first time with a bold new colour, it happens to the best of us: you finish rinsing, look in the mirror, and see a distinct “halo” of hair dye staining your forehead and ears. Don’t panic, and please, step away from that harsh scouring pad! As a colour correction specialist, I know that knowing how to remove hair dye from your face gently is just as important as the colour service itself.

The Best Defence is a Good Offence

Before you even mix your colour, apply a “barrier cream” along your hairline, on the tops of your ears, and on your neck. You don’t need a fancy product—a simple layer of petroleum jelly, a thick conditioner, or even lip balm works perfectly.

This prevents the dye from touching your skin in the first place. It’s a crucial first step, much like understanding how long to leave your hair colour on is for achieving the perfect shade.

4 Safe Ways to Remove Hair Dye Stains from Skin

If a stain does appear, here are some gentle and effective methods our Vancouver stylists swear by for safe stain removal.

1. Olive Oil or Coconut Oil

Let the oil sit on the stain for as long as possible (ideally, a few hours, but even 15 minutes helps). The oil helps to break down the pigment in the dye. Gently wipe it away with a damp cloth.

2. Makeup Remover

An oil-based makeup remover or a gentle micellar water can be very effective. Apply it to a cotton pad and rub the area in small, circular motions to remove hair color from the skin.

3. Toothpaste (Non-Gel)

A small amount of non-gel toothpaste can be used as a gentle exfoliant. Dab it on the hair dye stain on your forehead, gently rub with your finger, and remove with a warm washcloth.

4. The Steamy Towel Method

Dampen a washcloth with warm water and place it in the microwave for about 15 seconds until it’s steamy (be careful not to make it too hot!). The steam helps to open up your pores, making it easier to wipe the stain away.

Pro Tip: Be Patient and Gentle

If a small amount of colour is left, don’t stress. A shower and your natural skin oils will usually lift the last of the residue within a day. The absolute worst thing you can do is scrub aggressively, which will only irritate your skin and can compromise its natural barrier.
